Dave Willacker's Story
I grew up spending my summers with my grandparents in Conneaut Pennsylvania. There is a small amusement park there a little bigger than Cincinnati's Coney Island. My grandfather, a hard working Italian immigrant, was the manager of the kiddy land. Rarely did I get to go see him at work, instead my summer days were filled with the warmth of the sun and the good food of my grandmother. We did, however, live close enough to the park that I could always hear it in the distance. It was a magical place and a wonderful childhood.
Both my parents and grandparents were very religious and I have always felt that my role is to make the world better. To love and be loving to others. To use my life for the largest good. I have been aided along the way by my family. My grandfather taught me to work hard. My grandmother taught me to be frugal and not complain. My father taught me to think carefully, Mother taught me to dream. My sister taught me to write. All of them were loving. We were poor compared to some, but I was blessed.
I have always been drawn to theater. A rehearsal of life to come, a remembrance of lessons learned. I began performing when I was small, began writing plays not long after, and somewhere along the way discovered that I cannot sing or dance. Without these two crucial abilities or striking good looks theater as a career would not be possible. I became a youth minister, and began to give back in other ways.
It was by accident that my circus life began. Having little to do with my childhood at Conneaut Lake Park, or my upbringing in theater. My two longest friends could juggle, and they refused to show me how. They sited my uncoordination at most sports as the reason it would be a waste of their time. They were right, but also I think they weren't sure how to teach it. At the time I was offended and spent many hours teaching myself. Soon I realized that I loved to juggle. I began juggling everywhere I went, and became quite known for it. It would give rebirth to my ability on stage. I couldn't sing or dance, and I was only average (some say slightly below) looking, but I could juggle, and I was kind and a little funny. People began to offer me money to juggle places, then to stilt walk, then to make balloon animals, then to teach juggling to children, then to eat fire. I was helped by too many to list. The circus was born.
We went through many name changes Jugglers Ink, Juggler Dave and Friends, the Amazing Portable Circus, and finally the Cincinnati Circus Company. We have created much art. We have done much good.
Most recently I have been given the opportunity to help Conneaut Lake Park who has fallen on hard times. I have been able to speak at a several schools of impoverished children and we have begun a friendship with the Northern Kentucky Children's home. We have been able to be on TV several times and our entertainment offerings, as well as the number of people we are reaching out to has increased.
New this year we are unveiling a after school program called Home work / Circus work. We will come to school and teach circus skill to children after school. We will also take a moment to ask them what they are working on and take a brief look at their homework with them. The school program will be aided by high school volunteers who need service hours and can get them by helping this younger children with their homework under our supervision. Students who participate in the program will also be invited to a day at our Flying trapeze school over the summer.
Also new this year we have opened our indoor facility within the western hills sports mall and are teaching aerial fitness, flying trapeze and circus skills.
This summer we will offer several weeks of circus summer camp which will include flying trapeze, aerial acrobatics, tight rope, rolling globe, juggling, balancing, and performance.
We continue to perform, we continue to teach, we continue to create, we continue to dream. Thank you for your patronage.
